I started practicing yoga 2 years ago, I was 17. After 2 months of seeing my psychologist she recommended I try yoga, today I am so grateful to her and her guidance. My practice started at Hot Pod Yoga in Pretoria, after 10 days I was hooked and in love. I loved the feeling yoga brought to my body, the energy and self confidence boost made me come back for more. I went everyday, it was also a reason to leave home. When I found out The Source was hosting a teacher training at the studio I immediately tried to convince my dad to support me.
As most parents they did not understand yoga and didn’t like me practicing it, it took some time and lots of communication before they decided yes. I did not know the impact the course would have on my life, I just followed my heart and passion. I had no intention of becoming a teacher I merely wanted to learn more of the subject I loved. The training started as I was writing June exams in matric. I didn’t like school so I was happy to have yoga as a distraction. Except it wasn’t a distraction it made the exams go pleasantly and most importantly it made me happy.
I learned so much, I was the youngest in the group but built great friendships with my fellow students as well as the instructors. Bryan and Bianca came up from Cape Town, their way of being influenced me without me even knowing it. I looked up to them (and still do). Bianca’s chanting resonated with me so well, thanks to her I chant regularly now. It is one of the ways I celebrate the beauty and wonder off our world. Bryan’s philosophy put into words what I already felt. I realized I wasn’t weird for thinking the way I do, but that instead that I just thought more deeply than my peers. This helped greatly with my social anxiety. My family relationships also improved as they saw me happy which made them curious and we could strengthen our relationship.
After the training I taught at Hot Pod even though I was still a teacher in training. The training opened doors for me and strengthened my self practice. This year I came down to Cape Town (for the first time) to finish up my assessments, where I met most of the family. Annie and her joyful voice and beautiful smile, Renee and her kind heart, Bianca and her radiant why of being, Bryan and his wise knowledgeable soul and Sam and her playful heart made my visit to Cape Town. Thank you so much! I know you will be seeing me again.
